Hadith 1191

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that in the year of the conquest of Makkah, the Banu Khuza‘ah killed a man from Banu Laith in retaliation for one of their own who had been killed. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) learned of this, he mounted his ride and delivered a sermon, in which he also said: “Allah Almighty has forbidden killing in Makkah, and He has given authority over them to the Messenger of Allah and the believers. Beware! This (the Sacred Sanctuary of Makkah) was not made lawful for anyone before me, nor will it be made lawful for anyone after me. Be aware! It was made lawful for me for only a short period of the day. Beware! Now, at this time, it is forbidden; its thorns are not to be uprooted, its trees are not to be cut, and its lost property is not to be picked up except for the purpose of announcing it. If someone is killed, his heirs have the right to one of two options: either they accept blood money or they seek retribution (qisas).”

A Yemeni man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! (Please) have this sermon written for me. He said: “Write it for Abu So-and-so.” (During the Prophet’s sermon) a man said: O Messenger of Allah! Allow us to cut the grass called idhkhir, for we use it in our houses and graves. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “(Alright) you may cut the idhkhir grass.” Imam Muslim has added (these words in his narration): Waleed said: I said to Awza‘i: “(When the Yemeni said:) O Messenger of Allah! Have it written for me—what did he mean?” He said: The sermon which he had heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
