Hadith 1047

Narrated from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Aisha! If your people had not recently left the era of polytheism and if I had the expenses to complete the construction of the Ka'bah, I would have spent the treasure of the Ka'bah in the way of Allah, demolished the building of the Ka'bah, leveled it with the ground, then rebuilt it on the foundations of Ibrahim (peace be upon him), and then I would have made two doors for it, which would be at ground level (instead of being elevated), one door on the east side, through which people would enter, and one on the west side, through which people would exit. And I would have included the six cubits of space left out of the Hatim into the building of the Ka'bah, because when the Quraysh rebuilt the Ka'bah, they reduced (the original structure) due to lack of funds. (Aisha!) If after me your people wish to rebuild it, then come, I will show you the location of the space that was left out." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) showed her a space of about seven cubits.

In another narration: Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says: I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) about the enclosure or the Hatim on one side of the Ka'bah, whether it is part of the House of Allah? He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Yes." I said: Then why did (the Quraysh) not include it in the building? He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Your people ran short of funds." I said: Why is the door of the House of Allah elevated? He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Your people (the Quraysh) did this deliberately, so that they could allow some people to enter as they wished and prevent others as they wished."

In another narration: They did this out of their power (and pride), so that only those whom they intended could enter. (If someone whom they did not wish to enter tried to do so,) they would leave him; he would climb the stairs to enter, but when he tried to enter, they would push him and he would fall. If your people had not recently left the era of ignorance, you would have seen that I would have included the Hatim in the building of the House of Allah and brought the door down to ground level, but I fear that the people's hearts may find this strange and unfamiliar."

When Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) became the ruler, he demolished the building of the Ka'bah and made two doors for it. In another narration: This was the very hadith that encouraged Ibn Zubair to demolish the building of the Ka'bah. Yazid bin Roman says: When Abdullah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) demolished the building and rebuilt it, including the Hatim, I was also present. I saw the foundation laid by Ibrahim (peace be upon him); they were stones like the humps of camels, large, joined together, solid, and interlocked.
