Hadith 323
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both), he says that during the blessed era of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), one day there was a solar eclipse. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up and began to pray. He stood for so long that it seemed as if he did not intend to bow, and then he bowed for so long that it seemed as if he did not intend to rise from it. Then when he raised his blessed head, he stood in qiyam for so long that it was almost as if he would not go into prostration. Then when he prostrated, it was almost as if he would not raise his blessed head from prostration. Then when he raised his blessed head from prostration, he sat for so long that it was almost as if he would not perform the second prostration. Then he performed the second prostration for so long that it was almost as if he would not raise his blessed head from prostration. During this, he kept sighing and weeping and said: “O my Lord! Did You not promise me that as long as I am among them, You will not punish them? O my Lord! Did You not promise that as long as they seek forgiveness from You, You will not punish them? And we seek forgiveness from You.” When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) finished the two rak‘ahs, the sun had become bright. He stood up, praised and glorified Allah, and said: “Surely the sun and the moon are two signs among the signs of Allah. They do not eclipse because of anyone’s death or life. When you see them eclipsed, hasten to the remembrance of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic.”
