Hadith 308
It is narrated from Umm al-Mu'mineen Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), she says: The Quraysh used to fast on the day of Ashura during the period of ignorance, and likewise, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) also used to fast on this day. Then, when he came to Madinah Munawwarah, he himself fasted on this day and ordered the people to fast as well. Then, when the fasting of Ramadan was made obligatory, only the fasts of Ramadan remained as obligatory, and the fast of Ashura was abandoned. Whoever wished, fasted on this day, and whoever wished, left it.
