Hadith 248
حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مَنِيعٍ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا مَرْوَانُ بْنُ مُعَاوِيَةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الطَّائِفِيِّ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ الشَّرِيدِ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ: كُنْتُ رِدْفَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَأَنْشَدْتُهُ مِائَةَ قَافِيَةٍ مِنْ قَوْلِ أُمَيَّةَ بْنِ أَبِي الصَّلْتِ الثَّقَفِيِّ، كُلَّمَا أَنْشَدْتُهُ بَيْتًا قَالَ لِيَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «هِيهْ» حَتَّى أَنْشَدْتُهُ مِائَةً - يَعْنِي بَيْتًا - فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «إِنْ كَادَ لَيُسْلِمُ»
Umrah bin Shuraid narrates from his father, Sayyiduna Shuraid bin Suwaid (may Allah be pleased with him), that he said: I was sitting behind the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on a mount, and I recited to him one hundred couplets of poetry by Umayyah bin Abi al-Salt al-Thaqafi. Whenever I recited a verse, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would say: "Recite more." When I had completed one hundred verses, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He was close to becoming a Muslim."
