The Prophet’s favorite poem
Hadith 241
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ الثَّوْرِيُّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ عُمَيْرٍ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " إِنَّ أَصْدَقَ كَلِمَةٍ قَالَهْا الشَّاعِرُ كَلِمَةُ لَبِيدٍ: أَلَا كُلُّ شَيْءٍ مَا خَلَا اللَّهَ بَاطِلٌ، وَكَادَ أُمَيَّةُ بْنُ أَبِي الصَّلْتِ أَنْ يُسْلِمَ "
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, who says that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Of all the poetry spoken by poets, the truest statement is the saying of Labid: «ألا كل شيء ما خلا الله باطل», Beware! Everything except Allah Almighty is false (perishable)." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "And it was near that Umayyah bin Abi Salt would have become Muslim."
