The Prophet occasionally recited poetry
Hadith 240
حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ حُجْرٍ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا شَرِيكٌ، عَنِ الْمِقْدَامِ بْنِ شُرَيْحٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَتْ: قِيلَ لَهَا: هَلْ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَتَمَثَّلُ بِشَيْءٍ مِنَ الشِّعْرِ؟ قَالَتْ: كَانَ يَتَمَثَّلُ بِشِعْرِ ابْنِ رَوَاحَةَ، وَيَتَمَثَّلُ بِقَوْلِهِ: «وَيَأْتِيكَ بِالْأَخْبَارِ مَنْ لَمْ تُزَوَّدِ»
It is narrated from Umm al-Mu'mineen Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that she was asked whether the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) would, for example, recite any poetry. She replied, "(Yes), for example, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would sometimes recite a verse of poetry by Abdullah bin Rawaha, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would also recite this saying as an example: 'A man will come to you with news, whom you did not provide provisions for the journey.'"
