No sieves existed in the Prophet’s time
Hadith 145
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمَجِيدِ الْحَنَفِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو حَازِمٍ، عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، أَنَّهُ قِيلَ لَهُ: أَكَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ النَّقِيَّ؟ - يَعْنِي الْحُوَّارَى - فَقَالَ سَهْلٌ: «مَا رَأَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ النَّقِيَّ حَتَّى لَقِيَ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ تَعَالَى» ، فَقِيلَ لَهُ: هَلْ كَانَتْ لَكُمْ مَنَاخِلُ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ؟ قَالَ: «مَا كَانَتْ لَنَا مَنَاخِلُ» . قِيلَ: كَيْفَ كُنْتُمْ تَصْنَعُونَ بِالشَّعِيرِ؟ قَالَ: «كُنَّا نَنْفُخُهُ فَيَطِيرُ مِنْهُ مَا طَارَ ثُمَّ نَعْجِنُهُ»
It was asked from Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) whether the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ever ate bread made from sifted flour, that is, fine flour (maida)? Sayyiduna Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) never even saw bread made from fine flour until he met Allah, the Exalted. Then Sayyiduna Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked: Did you people not have sieves during the blessed time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? He replied: We did not have sieves. Then it was asked: What did you do with the flour of barley? He replied: We used to blow into it, so whatever could fly away (the husk) would fly away, then we would knead that flour.
