Moles Around the Seal of Prophethood
Hadith 23
حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ الْمِقْدَامِ أَبُو الْأَشْعَثِ الْعِجْلِيُّ الْبَصْرِيُّ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ، عَنْ عَاصِمٍ الْأَحْوَلِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سَرْجِسَ قَالَ: أَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ فِي نَاسٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ، فَدُرْتُ هَكَذَا مِنْ خَلْفِهِ، فَعَرَفَ الَّذِي أُرِيدُ، فَأَلْقَى الرِّدَاءَ عَنْ ظَهْرِهِ، فَرَأَيْتُ مَوْضِعَ الْخَاتَمِ عَلَى كَتِفَيْهِ مِثْلَ الْجُمْعِ حَوْلَهَا خِيلَانٌ كَأَنَّهَا ثَآلِيلُ، فَرَجَعْتُ حَتَّى اسْتَقْبَلْتُهُ، فَقُلْتُ: غَفَرَ اللَّهُ لَكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، فَقَالَ: «وَلَكَ» فَقَالَ الْقَوْمُ: أَسْتَغْفَرَ لَكَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ؟ فَقَالَ: نَعَمْ، وَلَكُمْ، ثُمَّ تَلَا هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ {وَاسْتَغْفِرْ لِذَنْبِكَ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ} [محمد: 19]
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Sarjis (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), walked around behind him, and he sensed my intention. So he removed the sheet from his back, and I saw the place of the Seal of Prophethood, which was like a fist, upon which were marks like moles, protruding like raised spots or the tips of nipples. (After seeing this) I returned to face the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! May Allah forgive you. So he said: “May He forgive you too.” The people said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has prayed for your forgiveness. He said: Yes! And for you as well. Then he recited this verse: «وَاسْتَغْفِرْ لِذَنبِكَ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ» [محمد: ١٩] “O Prophet! Seek forgiveness for yourself and for the believing men and believing women.”
