Hadith 21
Abdullah bin Buraidah narrates that I heard from my father, Sayyiduna Buraidah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived in Madinah Munawwarah, Sayyiduna Salman al-Farsi (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with a tray on which there were some fresh dates. He placed it before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “O Salman! What is this?” He replied: “This is charity for you and your companions.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Take it away, we do not eat charity.” (The narrator says) He took the tray away. Then the next day, in the same manner, he brought a tray and placed it before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: “Salman, what is this?” He replied: “O Messenger of Allah! This is a gift for you.” So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the companions: “Spread it out.” Then Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) saw the seal on the blessed back of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and brought faith in him. Since Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) was a slave of the Jews, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) bought him for such and such dirhams, and also on the condition that Salman would plant some date palms for those Jews and work on them until they bore fruit and became edible. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) planted all the saplings with his blessed hands, except for one sapling which Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) planted. All the saplings bore fruit in the first year except for one, which did not bear fruit. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: “What is the reason? Why did this one sapling not bear fruit?” Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: “O Messenger of Allah! I planted this one.” So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) uprooted it and replanted it, and it bore fruit in the same year.
