He (peace be upon him) Was More Beautiful Than the Moon
Hadith 9
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُوسَى مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ سِمَاكِ بْنِ حَرْبٍ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ جَابِرَ بْنَ سَمُرَةَ يَقُولُ: «كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ضَلِيعَ الْفَمِ، أَشْكَلَ الْعَيْنِ، مَنْهُوسَ الْعَقِبِ» . قَالَ شُعْبَةُ: قُلْتُ لِسِمَاكٍ: مَا ضَلِيعُ الْفَمِ؟ قَالَ: عَظِيمُ الْفَمِ، قُلْتُ: مَا أَشْكَلُ الْعَيْنِ؟ قَالَ: طَوِيلُ شِقِّ الْعَيْنِ، قُلْتُ: مَا مَنْهُوسُ الْعَقِبِ؟ قَالَ: قَلِيلُ لَحْمِ الْعَقِبِ.
Sayyiduna Jabir bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was «ضليع الفم», «اشكل العينين», and «منهوس العقب». Shu’bah says: I asked (my teacher) Simak bin Harb, “What is the meaning of «ضليع الفم»?” He said: “One with a wide and broad mouth.” I asked, “What does «اشكل العينين» mean?” He said: “The corners, that is, the edges of the eyes were long.” I asked, “What is the meaning of «منهوس العقب»?” He said: “There was little flesh on the heels.”
Hadith 10
حَدَّثَنَا هَنَّادُ بْنُ السَّرِيِّ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا عَبْثَرُ بْنُ الْقَاسِمِ، عَنْ أَشْعَثَ، يَعْنِي ابْنَ سَوَّارٍ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ قَالَ: «رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي لَيْلَةٍ إِضْحِيَانٍ، وَعَلَيْهِ حُلَّةٌ حَمْرَاءُ، فَجَعَلْتُ أَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهِ وَإِلَى الْقَمَرِ، فَلَهُوَ عِنْدِي أَحْسَنُ مِنَ الْقَمَرِ»
Sayyiduna Jabir bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on a moonlit night. He was wearing a red garment. I would look at him and then at the moon. Indeed, to me, he (peace and blessings be upon him) was more beautiful than the moon.
