Judgment on dispute between Abbas and Ali
Hadith 405
حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ الْخَلَّالُ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا بِشْرُ بْنُ عُمَرَ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ مَالِكَ بْنَ أَنَسٍ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ مَالِكِ بْنِ أَوْسِ بْنِ الْحَدَثَانِ قَالَ : دَخَلْتُ عَلَى عُمَرَ فَدَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَوْفٍ، وَطَلْحَةُ، وَسَعْدٌ، وَجَاءَ عَلِيٌّ، وَالْعَبَّاسُ، يَخْتَصِمَانِ، فَقَالَ لَهُمْ عُمَرُ: أَنْشُدُكُمْ بِالَّذِي بِإِذْنِهِ تَقُومُ السَّمَاءُ وَالْأَرْضُ، أَتَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «لَا نُورَثُ، مَا تَرَكْنَاهُ صَدَقَةٌ» فَقَالُوا: اللَّهُمَّ نَعَمْ وَفِي الْحَدِيثِ قِصَّةٌ طَوِيلَةٌ
Malik bin Aws bin Hadthan (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that I went to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and there Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf, Sayyiduna Talha, and Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with them all) also arrived. Meanwhile, Sayyiduna Ali al-Murtaza and Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) also came there while arguing with each other. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked them: I ask you by the One by whose command the heavens and the earth are established, do you know the saying of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: “We (the group of Prophets) do not leave inheritance; whatever we leave behind is charity.” They replied: Yes. There is also a long story mentioned in this hadith.
