Another narration of thirteen rak‘ahs at night
Hadith 268
حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ مَالِكِ بْنِ أَنَسٍ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ مُوسَى قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا مَعْنٌ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا مَالِكٌ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ قَيْسِ بْنِ مَخْرَمَةَ، أَخْبَرَهُ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ الْجُهَنِيِّ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ: لَأَرْمُقَنَّ صَلَاةَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَتَوَسَّدْتُ عَتَبَتَهُ، أَوْ فُسْطَاطَهُ «فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَكْعَتَيْنِ خَفِيفَتَيْنِ، ثُمَّ صَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ طَوِيلَتَيْنِ، طَوِيلَتَيْنِ، طَوِيلَتَيْنِ، ثُمَّ صَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ وَهُمَا دَونَ اللَّتَيْنِ قَبْلَهُمَا، ثُمَّ صَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ وَهُمَا دُونَ اللَّتَيْنِ قَبْلَهُمَا، ثُمَّ صَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ وَهُمَا دُونَ اللَّتَيْنِ قَبْلَهُمَا، ثُمَّ صَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ وَهُمَا دُونَ اللَّتَيْنِ قَبْلَهُمَا، ثُمَّ أَوْتَرَ فَذَلِكَ ثَلَاثَ عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً»
Sayyiduna Zayd bin Khalid al-Juhani, may Allah be pleased with him, says: I resolved in my heart that tonight I will definitely observe the prayer of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, so I leaned against his doorstep or tent. Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, stood and performed two light rak‘ahs, then two long rak‘ahs, then two rak‘ahs shorter than those, then two rak‘ahs shorter than those, then two rak‘ahs shorter than those, then two rak‘ahs shorter than those, then he performed Witr, making a total of thirteen rak‘ahs.
