Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that he spent a night at the house of Umm al-Mu’minin Sayyida Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her), and she was his maternal aunt. He says: I lay down across the bed, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) lay down lengthwise. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) slept until, when half the night had passed, or a little before it or a little after it, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) woke up and began to wipe away sleep from his face, and recited the last ten verses of Surah Al-Imran. Then he got up and went to a hanging water-skin and performed ablution from it thoroughly. Then he stood and began to pray. Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: I stood on his left side, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) placed his blessed right hand on my head, then took hold of my right ear and twisted it. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed two rak‘ahs, then two rak‘ahs, then two rak‘ahs, then two rak‘ahs, then two rak‘ahs, then two rak‘ahs. The narrator Ma‘n says: He prayed two rak‘ahs six times, then prayed Witr. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) lay down until the mu’adhdhin came. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood and prayed two light rak‘ahs, then went out (to the mosque) and led the Fajr prayer.
