Shaykh Umar Farooq Saeedi
Benefits and Issues:
➊ This hadith proves that performing ablution (wudu) is not obligatory after eating something cooked over fire; rather, this ruling has been abrogated.
➋ In this incident, the affection of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) for the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) is mentioned.
➌ The phrase that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) used for Bilal (radi Allahu anhu) was an ordinary statement; it was not intended as a supplication against him.
➍ Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) deduces from this that the appointed imam should not delay (the prayer) due to eating.
➎ Mustaches should be kept short, and an elder has the right to trim the overgrown mustache of his close one.

Keeping Long Mustaches
In the narration of Anbari, there is this addition: “My mustache had grown long, so the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam placed a miswak under my mustache and trimmed it,” or he said: “I will place a miswak and trim these hairs of yours.”
Authentication and Referencing: Its chain is authentic.
Sunan Abi Dawud (188), Musnad Ahmad (4/252, 255)
Explanation and Benefits:
One should not keep long mustaches; rather, it is necessary to trim a portion of them within forty days.
It is narrated from Ishaq bin Isa al-Tabba’ (a trustworthy narrator) that he said: I saw (Imam) Malik bin Anas (rahimahullah), his mustache was full and thick, and the ends of both his mustaches were thin. Then I asked him about this, so he said: Zayd bin Aslam narrated to me from Amir bin Abdullah bin Zubair, who narrated from Abdullah bin Zubair (radi Allahu anhu) that whenever there was an important matter, Umar bin al-Khattab (radi Allahu anhu) would twist his mustache and blow from his mouth. Thus, he gave me a fatwa along with the hadith.
It is narrated from Abu Salamah (the Tabi’i, rahimahullah) that he said: I saw Ibn Umar (radi Allahu anhu), he would trim his mustache so much that he would not leave anything of it.
Imam Sufyan bin ‘Uyaynah al-Makki rahimahullah used to shave his mustache with a razor. [
Whereas, in complete contrast, Imam Malik rahimahullah said:
«يؤخذ من الشارب حتي يبدو طرف الشفة وهو الإطار ولا يجزّه فيمثّل بنفسه»
One should trim some of the mustache so that the edge of the lip becomes visible, and this is the edge that surrounds the lips from the side of the mouth, and he should not shave it completely (i.e., not shave it with a razor), otherwise he would become one who mutilates himself.
This issue is a matter of ijtihad, and the preferred opinion is that the mustache should not be shaved with a razor, but rather trimmed with scissors or the like, until the skin becomes visible. And if one trims from above the lips and leaves the rest of the mustache to grow, that is also permissible. «والله اعلم»

The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam used to trim his mustache very short.
[فقرہ نمبر 15] It is narrated from Ubayd bin Jurayj rahimahullah that he said: I said to (Sayyiduna) Abdullah bin Umar (radi Allahu anhu): I see that you trim your mustache and make it completely clean? He replied: «رأيت النبى صلى الله عليه وسلم يحفي شاربه» I saw the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, he would trim (and clean) his mustache. (Tabaqat Ibn Sa’d 1/449, and its chain is authentic)
The whiteness of the skin above the lips of Sayyiduna Ibn Umar radi Allahu anhu would be visible after trimming his mustache. (Sahih Bukhari, suspended before Hadith 5888, and it has a good supporting narration in Taghliq al-Ta’liq 5/72)
The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam ordered Mughira bin Shu’bah radi Allahu anhu, whose mustache was long, to place a miswak under it and trim it. (See Sunan Abi Dawud: 188, and its chain is authentic, Shama’il al-Tirmidhi with my verification: 165)
From this, it is known that not trimming the mustache extremely short is also permissible, and it is also established from Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu that he would sometimes twist his mustache. See: (Shama’il al-Tirmidhi with my verification, pp. 195–196 under Hadith 165)
