The Prophet’s lungi reached mid-calf
Hadith 119
حَدَّثَنَا مَحْمُودُ بْنُ غَيْلَانَ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو دَاوُدَ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ، عَنِ الْأَشْعَثِ بْنِ سُلَيْمٍ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ عَمَّتِي، تُحَدِّثُ عَنْ عَمِّهَا قَالَ : بَيْنَا أَنَا أَمشِي بِالْمَدِينَةِ، إِذَا إِنْسَانٌ خَلْفِي يَقُولُ: «ارْفَعْ إِزَارَكَ، فَإِنَّهُ أَتْقَى وَأَبْقَى» فَإِذَا هُوَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّمَا هِيَ بُرْدَةٌ مَلْحَاءُ قَالَ: «أَمَا لَكَ فِيَّ أُسْوَةٌ؟» فَنَظَرْتُ فَإِذَا إِزَارُهُ إِلَى نِصْفِ سَاقَيْهِ
Ash'ath bin Salim says that I heard from my paternal aunt, who narrates from her uncle that he said: I was once walking in Madinah Munawwarah when a person behind me was saying: "Raise your lower garment, for this is more protective (from filth) and more lasting (for the garment)." I turned towards the one speaking, and it was the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). I said: O Messenger of Allah! This is just an ordinary striped sheet. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Is my practice not an example for you?" I saw that the lower garment of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reached halfway up his shins.
