Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Ya'mar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that I was present with the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) at Arafat, and some people from Najd also came to him while they too were at Arafat. They asked you a question, so you ordered a caller to announce, and he made this proclamation: "Hajj is (standing at) Arafat. Whoever reaches Arafat before the dawn of the night of Muzdalifah, he has attained Hajj. The days of staying in Mina are three. Then whoever hastens in two days, there is no sin upon him, and whoever delays (and spends the third day in Mina), there is also no sin upon him." And the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) seated a man behind him on his mount who was making this announcement. Imam Abu Bakr (may Allah have mercy on him) says that these words "Hajj is Arafat" are of the same kind as I have explained in the Book of Faith, that sometimes the application of a definite noun with 'al' (the) is made not for the whole thing but for a part or portion of it. The Prophet (peace be upon him), by saying "al-Hajj," meant the standing at Arafat, although the standing at Arafat is not the complete Hajj, but rather a part of Hajj. I have explained this type in the Book of Faith; for the one whom Allah has granted religious understanding and guidance to the right path, this is sufficient.
