Sayyiduna Ya’la bin Umayyah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that one day my complexion had changed (I was unwell), so one of my friends said to me, “Come home with us.” So I went home, took a bath, and applied perfume of khuluq. And the blessed practice of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was that (at the time of prayer) he would pass his blessed hand over our faces (and supplicate goodness for us). Then when he came near me, he withdrew his hand from the saffron perfume, and when he finished the prayer, he said to me: “O Ya’la, why have you applied saffron perfume? Have you gotten married?” I replied, “No.” So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered me: “Go and wash off this perfume.” Sayyiduna Ya’la bin Umayyah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I went to a well and bathed in it, then I scrubbed off the perfume thoroughly with clay. Then I returned, and when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw me, he said: “Ya’la has repented and returned to his best religion, and the One in the heavens is also pleased.” Imam Abu Bakr (may Allah have mercy on him) says: In the same way, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered Sayyiduna Ya’la bin Murrah (may Allah be pleased with him) to wash off saffron perfume, even though he was not in the state of ihram, just as he ordered one in ihram to wash off saffron perfume.
The command of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, in the narration of Ya'la regarding washing off the perfume that was on the muhrim, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, also commanded the non-muhrim to wash off the khaluq with which he had perfumed himself, thus equating in the command to wash off the khaluq between the muhrim and the non-muhrim.
