Hazrat Abdullah bin Abi Qatadah narrates from his esteemed father, Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him), that he was on a journey and some of his companions were in the state of ihram. Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) saw game, so he mounted his horse and chased a wild donkey and hunted it. Then the people ate its meat. Afterwards, they became somewhat fearful (about eating the meat of game while in the state of ihram). So they asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about this matter. He said: "Did you participate in the hunting, or did you point (towards the game, thereby drawing Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah’s attention to it)?" They replied, "No." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered, "Then eat it."

In the narration of Ibn ‘Adi, it is stated: "Did you point or help?" In the narration of Ibn Abi ‘Adi from Imam Shu’bah, the words are: "Did you point, or hunt, or help in hunting?" The noble Companions replied, "No." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then eat it."
