Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah

Sayyiduna Saeed narrates that Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) went out with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to participate in a battle. During this time, the time of death approached for Umm Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with her). She was told to make a will. She said, “What kind of will should I make? Surely, all the wealth belongs to Sa’d.” Then she passed away before Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) returned. When Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) returned, the whole matter was told to him. So he said, “O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), if I give charity on behalf of my mother, will it benefit her?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Yes, it will benefit her.” Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “Then such-and-such garden”—he mentioned its name—“is charity on behalf of my mother.”

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the chief of Banu Sa'idah, Sayyiduna Sa'd bin 'Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him), submitted: "O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), my mother has passed away while I was not present with her. If I give something in charity on her behalf, will that charity benefit her?" The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Yes." Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I make you a witness that my orchard of dates (Mukhraf) is charity on her behalf."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a man said to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): "My mother has passed away. If I give charity on her behalf, will she benefit from it?" The wording of the narration of Ahmad bin Mani’ is as follows: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), my mother has passed away and I have a date orchard."
