Hadith 2487
Hazrat Ahnaf bin Qais (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated a lengthy hadith regarding the martyrdom of Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him). And he said: Suddenly, Sayyiduna Ali, Zubair, Talha, and Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with them) arrived while I was still standing in that state. Then Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) came and said: I ask you by Allah, besides whom there is no true deity, do you know that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Who will purchase the well of Rumah (and dedicate it for the Muslims)? Allah will forgive him.” So I bought that well for such and such amount. Then I came to your service and submitted that I have bought that well for such and such price. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Make this well a public utility for the Muslims (so that people may drink from it and give others to drink), and you will have its reward.” All those present said: Yes, certainly it is so.
