Hadith 2392
Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) saying when he made Zakat al-Fitr obligatory. He (peace be upon him) was saying: “(Zakat al-Fitr) is obligatory as one sa’ of dates and one sa’ of barley.” Thus, Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to give dates as Zakat al-Fitr.

Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) made obligatory the Sadaqat al-Fitr of one sa’ of dates or one sa’ of barley. Accordingly, Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) used to give one sa’ of dates as Sadaqat al-Fitr on behalf of every young and old member of his household and his slaves, except for one year when dates were not available, so he gave barley on loan and paid it. Then, when the era of Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) came, people started giving half a sa’ (two mudd) of wheat in place of one sa’ of barley.
