جماع أبواب قسم الصدقات وذكر أهل سهمانهاChapters on Distribution of Zakat and its Recipients
(106) بَابُ اسْتِحْبَابِ الِاسْتِعْفَافِ عَنْ أَكْلِ الصَّدَقَةِ لِمَنْ يَجِدُ عَنْهَا غِنًى. يعْنِي مِنَ الْمَعَانِي، وَإِنْ كَانَ مِنْ أَهْلِهَا إِذْ هِيَ غُسَالَةُ ذُنُوبِ النَّاسِ
106 Subchapter: Recommending abstaining from charity if one is not in need, even if eligible
Hadith 2390
حَدَّثَنَا يُوسُفُ بْنُ مُوسَى ، حَدَّثَنَا قَبِيصَةُ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ أَبِي عَائِشَةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ ، قَالَ : قُلْتُ لِلْعَبَّاسِ : سَلِ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَسْتَعْمِلُكَ عَلَى الصَّدَقَةِ ، قَالَ : " مَا كُنْتُ لأَسْتَعْمِلُكَ عَلَى غُسَالَةِ ذُنُوبِ النَّاسِ "
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that I said to Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) to request the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to appoint you as the collector of Zakat. (Upon his request) the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I will not appoint you over the filth of people's sins."
