Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah

Sayyiduna Abu Humayd As-Sa’idi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) appointed a man from the tribe of Azd, who was called Ibn Lutbiyyah, as a collector of zakat from Banu Sulaym. When he returned with the wealth, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took account of him. He said, “This is your share, and this (other) is a gift that was given to me.” Upon this, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Why did you not sit in your father’s or mother’s house so that your gift would come to you if you are truthful?” Then he addressed us and praised and glorified Allah, then said: “To proceed, I appoint one of you over some of the tasks which Allah has entrusted to me, and he returns saying, ‘This is your wealth and this was given to me as a gift.’ Why did he not sit in his father’s or mother’s house so that his gift would come to him if he is truthful? By Allah, whoever among you takes anything unlawfully will meet Allah on the Day of Resurrection carrying it. So I do not want to see any of you meeting Allah carrying a camel that is groaning, or a cow that is mooing, or a sheep that is bleating on his neck.” Then he raised his hands until the whiteness of his armpits was visible and said: “O Allah, have I conveyed (Your command)?” My eyes saw this scene and my ears heard these words.
