(65) بَابُ ذِكْرِ الْبَيَانِ أَنَّ مَا كَتَمَ السَّاعِي مِنْ قَلِيلِ الْمَالِ أَوْ كَثِيرِهِ عَنِ الْإِمَامِ كَانَ مَا كَتَمَ غُلُولًا.
65| Chapter clarifying that whatever the collector conceals from the imam is considered embezzlement
Hadith 2338
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ ، حَدَّثَنَا قَيْسٌ ، عَنْ عَدِيِّ بْنِ عَمِيرَةَ الْكِنْدِيِّ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مَنْ عَمِلَ مِنْكُمْ لَنَا عَلَى عَمَلٍ فَكَتَمَنَا مِنْهُ مِخْيَطًا فَمَا فَوْقَهُ ، فَهُوَ غُلٌّ يَأْتِي بِهِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ " ، فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الأَنْصَارِ أَسْوَدُ كَأَنِّي أَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهِ ، فَقَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، اقْبَلْ مِنِّي عَمَلَكَ ، قَالَ : لِمَ ؟ قَالَ : سَمِعْتُكَ تَقُولُ : كَذَا وَكَذَا ، قَالَ : " وَأَنَا أَقُولُ ذَلِكَ مَنِ اسْتَعْمَلْنَاهُ عَلَى عَمَلٍ فَلْيَجِئْ بِقَلِيلِهِ وَكَثِيرِهِ ، فَمَا أُوتِيَ مِنْهُ أَخَذَهُ وَمَا نُهِيَ عَنْهُ انْتَهَى "
Sayyiduna ‘Adi bin ‘Umayrah Kindi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Whoever is appointed by us to do any work and then conceals from it even a needle or anything less than that, it is a betrayal, and he will bring it with him on the Day of Resurrection.” Upon hearing this, a black Ansari man— as if I am seeing him— said, “O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), take back your responsibility from me.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, “Why?” He replied, “Because I heard you say such and such.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “And I say this: When we appoint someone to a responsibility, he should bring forth whatever little or much he has, then take what is given to him and refrain from what is withheld from him.”
