Hadith 1916
حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ حُجْرٍ السَّعْدِيُّ ، نا إِسْمَاعِيلُ يَعْنِي ابْنَ جَعْفَرٍ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدٍ يَعْنِي ابْنَ أَبِي حَرْمَلَةَ ، عَنْ كُرَيْبٍ ، أَنَّ أُمَّ الْفَضْلِ بِنْتَ الْحَارِثِ بَعَثَتْهُ إِلَى مُعَاوِيَةَ بِالشَّامِ ، قَالَ : فَقَدِمْتُ الشَّامَ فَقَضَيْتُ حَاجَتَهَا ، وَاسْتَهَلَّ عَلَيَّ هِلالُ رَمَضَانَ وَأَنَا بِالشَّامِ ، فَرَأَيْنَا الْهِلالَ لَيْلَةَ الْجُمُعَةِ ، وَرَآهُ النَّاسُ وَصَامُوا ، وَصَامَ مُعَاوِيَةُ ، فَقَدِمْتُ الْمَدِينَةَ فِي آخِرِ الشَّهْرِ فَسَأَلَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَبَّاسٍ ثُمَّ ذَكَرَ الْهِلالَ ، فَقَالَ : " مَتَى رَأَيْتُمُ الْهِلالَ ؟ " فَقُلْتُ : رَأَيْنَاهُ لَيْلَةَ الْجُمُعَةِ . فَقَالَ : " أَنْتَ رَأَيْتَهُ لَيْلَةَ الْجُمُعَةِ ؟ " قُلْتُ : نَعَمْ أَنَا رَأَيْتُهُ لَيْلَةَ الْجُمُعَةِ ، وَرَآهُ النَّاسُ ، وَصَامُوا وَصَامَ مُعَاوِيَةُ . قَالَ : " لَكِنَّنَا رَأَيْنَاهُ لَيْلَةَ السَّبْتِ فَلا نَزَالُ نَصُومُهُ حَتَّى نُكْمِلَ ثَلاثِينَ أَوْ نَرَاهُ " ، فَقُلْتُ : أَوَلا تَكْتَفِي بِرُؤْيَةِ مُعَاوِيَةَ وَصِيَامِهِ ؟ قَالَ : " لا هكَذَا أَمَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ "
It is narrated from Janab Kareeb that Umm Fadl bint Harith sent him to Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) in the land of Shaam. He says that I came to Shaam and fulfilled his work and need, and I saw the crescent of Ramadan in Shaam itself. So we saw the crescent on the night of Friday, and the people saw the crescent and fasted, and Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) also fasted. Then at the end of the month, I returned to Madinah Munawwarah, and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) asked me about the crescent, so he inquired, "When did you see the crescent?" I replied, "We saw the crescent on the night of Friday." He asked, "Did you yourself see the crescent on the night of Friday?" I replied, "Yes, I myself saw the crescent on the night of Friday, and the people also saw the crescent and fasted, and Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) also fasted." So Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said, "But we saw the crescent on the night of Saturday, therefore we will continue to fast in this manner until we complete thirty days or see the crescent." I asked, "Will you not suffice with the sighting and fasting of Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him)?" He replied, "No, this is how the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded us."
