Sayyiduna Bara’ (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that when any of the companions of Muhammad (peace be upon him) was fasting, and the time for iftar (breaking the fast) arrived, if he slept before breaking his fast, then he would not eat anything that night and until the next evening. Sayyiduna Qais bin Sirmah (may Allah be pleased with him) was fasting, and when the time for iftar came, he went to his wife and asked, “Do you have any food?” She replied, “No, but I will go and find some for you.” So she went to get food for him, and Sayyiduna Qais (may Allah be pleased with him) had been working all day, so he fell asleep. His wife came (with the food), and seeing him asleep, said, “Alas, you have missed out.” So he remained in that state until morning. Then, when it was midday, he fainted. This matter was mentioned to the Prophet (peace be upon him), so this verse was revealed « أُحِلَّ لَكُمْ لَيْلَةَ الصِّيَامِ الرَّفَثُ إِلَىٰ نِسَائِكُمْ » [ سورة البقرة : 187 ] “It has been made lawful for you to have relations with your wives on the night of fasting.” The companions were very pleased with this. Then Allah Almighty revealed further in the Qur’an « وَكُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا حَتَّىٰ يَتَبَيَّنَ لَكُمُ الْخَيْطُ الْأَبْيَضُ مِنَ الْخَيْطِ الْأَسْوَدِ مِنَ الْفَجْرِ » [ سورة البقرة : 187 ] “Eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread.”
