Imam Ibn Shihab, may Allah have mercy on him, says that Sayyiduna Mahmood bin Rabi’ Al-Ansari, may Allah be pleased with him, informed me that he remembered the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, very well, and he also remembered the mouthful of water which the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, had playfully squirted at his face from a bucket taken from the well at his house. Thus, Sayyiduna Mahmood, may Allah be pleased with him, narrates that he heard Sayyiduna ‘Itban bin Malik Al-Ansari, may Allah be pleased with him, saying—and he had participated in the Battle of Badr with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him: I used to lead my people, Banu Salim, in prayer, and when the rains would descend, a valley (due to the flood water) would come between me and my people, making it very difficult for me to cross it and reach their mosque. Therefore, I came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and said: Indeed, my eyesight has become weak, and when it rains, a valley flows between me and my people, and it becomes difficult for me to cross it. Therefore, I wish that you, peace and blessings be upon you, would come and perform prayer in my house at the place where I pray, so that I may take it as a prayer place. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Soon I will fulfill your wish.” So, the next day, after the sun had risen high, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, came. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sought permission from me to enter (the house), and I granted permission. Without sitting, he, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “In which part of your house do you wish me to lead the prayer?” So I pointed to the place where I wished him, peace and blessings be upon him, to lead the prayer. Upon this, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, stood up and said the takbeer, and we formed rows behind him, peace and blessings be upon him. Thus, he, peace and blessings be upon him, performed two rak’ahs, then gave salam, and we also gave salam after the salam of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.
