169| Chapter on permitting women to attend mosques
Hadith 1677
نا عَبْدُ الْجَبَّارِ بْنُ الْعَلاءِ ، نا سُفْيَانُ ، قَالَ : حَفِظْتُهُ مِنَ الزُّهْرِيِّ . ح وَحَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ خَشْرَمٍ ، أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ . ح وَحَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ حَكِيمٍ ، وَسَعِيدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، قَالا : حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، عَنْ سَالِمٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، يَبْلُغُ بِهِ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " إِذَا اسْتَأْذَنَتْ أَحَدَكُمُ امْرَأَتُهُ إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ فَلا يَمْنَعْهَا " . قَالَ عَلِيٌّ : قَالَ سُفْيَانُ : نَرَى أَنَّهُ بِاللَّيْلِ . وَقَالَ عَبْدُ الْجَبَّارِ : قَالَ سُفْيَانُ : يَعْنِي بِاللَّيْلِ . وَقَالَ سَعِيدٌ : قَالَ سُفْيَانُ : قَالَ نَافِعٌ : بِاللَّيْلِ . وَقَالَ يَحْيَى بْنُ حَكِيمٍ : قَالَ سُفْيَانُ : رَجُلٌ فَحَدَّثْنَاهُ ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ : إِنَّمَا هُوَ بِاللَّيْلِ
Hazrat Salim narrates from his esteemed father Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) in a marfu’ narration that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “When the wife of any one of you seeks permission to go to the mosque, do not prevent her.” Janab Ali bin Khushram says that Sufyan (may Allah have mercy on him) says that in our view, this permission is regarding going to the mosque at night (for prayer). Janab Abdul Jabbar, Saeed, and Yahya bin Hakeem narrate from Imam Sufyan (may Allah have mercy on him) that a person told us from Imam Nafi’ that this ruling is for the night time.
