Sayyiduna Abu Sa‘id (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that we had not gone much further when Khaybar was conquered, and we reached a field of garlic. He says that the people were extremely hungry, so we ate garlic to our fill. Then we came to the mosque. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sensed the smell and said: “Whoever has eaten from this foul-smelling plant should not come near our mosque.” Upon this, people began to say that garlic had become forbidden, garlic had become forbidden. When this reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he said: “O people, I have no right to declare as forbidden what Allah has made lawful. But this is a plant whose smell I do not like.” This is the narration of Abu Hashim. And Abu Musa, in his narration, has added these words: “And the situation is that one who whispers from among my angels comes to me, so I dislike that they should sense its odor from me.”
