41| Prohibition of the visitor leading the prayer
Hadith 1520
أنا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الدَّوْرَقِيُّ ، نا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبَانُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ ، عَنْ بُدَيْلٍ الْعُقَيْلِيِّ ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو عَطِيَّةَ رَجُلٌ مِنَّا ، وَحَدَّثَنَا سَلْمُ بْنُ جُنَادَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ ، عَنْ أَبَانَ بْنِ يَزِيدَ الْعَطَّارِ ، عَنْ بُدَيْلِ بْنِ مَيْسَرَةَ الْعُقَيْلِيِّ ، عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْهُمْ يُكْنَى أَبَا عَطِيَّةَ ، وَهَذَا حَدِيثُ الدَّوْرَقِيِّ ، قَالَ : أَتَانَا مَالِكُ بْنُ الْحُوَيْرِثِ ، فَحَضَرَتِ الصَّلاةُ ، فَقِيلَ لَهُ : تَقَدَّمْ ، قَالَ : لِيَؤُمَّكُمْ رَجُلٌ مِنْكُمْ ، فَلَمَّا صَلَّوْا ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُ : " إِذَا زَارَ الرَّجُلُ الْقَوْمَ فَلا يَؤُمَّهُمْ ، وَلْيَؤُمَّهُمْ رَجُلٌ مِنْهُمْ " . وَفِي حَدِيثِ وَكِيعٍ ، قَالَ : " لِيَتَقَدَّمْ بَعْضُكُمْ ، حَتَّى أُحَدِّثَكُمْ لِمَ لا أَتَقَدَّمُ "
Abu Atiyyah says that Sayyiduna Malik bin Huwairith (may Allah be pleased with him) came to us, and the time for prayer arrived. It was suggested to him to step forward (and lead the congregation). He said that someone from among you should lead the congregation. When he had performed the prayer, he said: I heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: "When a person goes to meet a people, he should not lead them in prayer; rather, someone from among them should lead them in prayer." In the narration of Janab Waki’, these words are present: He said that someone from among you should step forward (and lead the congregation); I will tell you why I did not step forward.
