Hadith 1510
Sayyiduna Malik bin Huwairith (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that I and one of my companions came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) (to learn religious matters). Then when we intended to return, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to us: "When the time for prayer comes, give the adhan, then give the iqamah, then the elder among you should lead the prayer." In his narration, Al-Dawraqi has added these words: He says that I asked Hazrat Abu Qilabah: Why was proficiency in the recitation of the Qur'an not made the criterion? He replied that both companions were equal in recitation. (Therefore, the elder in age was given the right to lead the prayer.)
