Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that we used to prevent our young girls from going out (for Eid). A woman came and stayed at the palace of Banu Khalaf. She narrated that her sister was the wife of a companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), a companion who participated in twelve battles with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). My sister was with him in six battles. She says that we used to treat the wounded and nurse the sick. My sister asked the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him): “Will any woman among us be sinful if she does not go out because she does not have a cloak?” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Her friend should lend her one of her cloaks so that she may wear it, and she should join in goodness and the supplication of the believers.”
Then when Sayyidah Umm ‘Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) came, I asked her, or we asked her, we said: “Did you hear the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say such and such?” Whenever Sayyidah Umm ‘Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) remembered the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), she would say: “May my father be sacrificed for him.” She replied: “Yes, may my father be sacrificed for him. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: ‘Young women, women in seclusion, or young and secluded women, and menstruating women should go out (for Eid). They should participate in goodness and attend the supplication of the believers, but the menstruating women should stay away from the prayer area.’” I said to Umm ‘Atiyyah: “Should even the menstruating woman go?” She replied: “Does not the menstruating woman attend (Hajj) at the plain of ‘Arafat? Does she not participate in such and such activities? Does she not attend such and such places?”
