It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to go out (to the Eid ground) on the days of Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Fitr. He (peace be upon him) would begin with the prayer, and when he had completed the prayer and turned to face the people with his blessed face, while they were sitting in their places of prayer, if there was a need to send an army or any other matter, he would inform the people about it. And if there was any (financial) need, he would command them regarding it. He (peace be upon him) used to say: "Give charity and alms, give charity, give charity." And most of those who gave charity were women. Then he (peace be upon him) would return. This continued until the caliphate of Marwan bin Hakam. Then (during his rule), I went out holding Marwan's hand until we reached the Eid ground. Suddenly, we saw that Kathir bin Salt had built a pulpit in the Eid ground with clay and bricks. Suddenly, Marwan began to pull his hand away from me, as if he was pulling me towards the pulpit and I was pulling him towards the Eid ground. When I saw this action of his, I said, "Where has the practice of beginning with the prayer gone?" So Marwan said, "O Abu Sa'id, that has been left, as you know." So I said in a loud voice, "Never! By the One in whose hand is my soul, you cannot do better than what I know." I said this three times, then I went back.
