Thalabah bin Abad Al-Abdi Al-Basri narrates that he attended a sermon of Sayyiduna Samurah bin Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him). In his sermon, he related: One day, during the blessed era of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), an Ansari boy and I were practicing archery until the sun, in the eyes of the beholders, was left at the height of two or three spears above the horizon, then it became dark as if it were a black seed. One of us said to his companion, "Let us go to the mosque. By Allah, in this state of the sun, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) will surely give his Ummah some new command." So we set out for the mosque and suddenly saw that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting outside. We reached the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when he had come out to the people. Sayyiduna Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) advanced and led us in a prayer with such a long standing (qiyam) that we had never performed such a lengthy prayer before. His voice was not being heard. Then he made us bow (ruku) for so long that we had never performed such a lengthy ruku before. His voice was not being heard. Then he made us prostrate (sajdah) for so long that we had never performed such a lengthy sajdah with him before. His voice was not being heard. Then in the second rak'ah, he did the same. The companion says that when he was sitting in the tashahhud of the second rak'ah, the sun became bright again. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) ended the prayer with salam, praised and glorified Allah, and testified that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, and testified that he (peace and blessings be upon him) is Allah's servant and Messenger. Then he said: "O people, indeed I am a human being and Allah's Messenger. I admonish you in the name of Allah. If you know that I have fallen short in conveying my Lord's messages, then do not respond to me until I have conveyed my Lord's messages as they deserve to be conveyed. And if you know that I have conveyed my Lord's messages, then you must inform me." He says that the people stood up and said, "We bear witness that you (peace and blessings be upon him) have conveyed your Lord's messages, have shown great goodwill to your Ummah, and have fulfilled your duty." Then they fell silent, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "As for what follows, indeed some people think that this solar eclipse, this lunar eclipse, and the disappearance of stars from their places is due to the death of some great person among the people of the earth. Undoubtedly, they are lying, but these are among the signs of Allah with which Allah tests His servants, so that He may see who among them repents. By Allah, since I stood in prayer, I have seen everything that you will receive in your world and in your Hereafter. And by Allah, the Hour will not be established until thirty liars (claimants to prophethood) appear. The last of them will be the Dajjal, whose left eye will be damaged, as if it is the eye of the Ansari old man Abu Yahya or Tihya. And indeed, when he appears, he will claim that he is Allah. So whoever believes in him, affirms him, and follows him, his previous good deeds will not benefit him at all. And whoever disbelieves in him and rejects him, none of his previous deeds will be held against him. And he will dominate all the earth except the two sacred precincts (Makkah and Madinah) and Bayt al-Maqdis. He will besiege the believers in Bayt al-Maqdis, and a severe earthquake will come upon them. He says that then Allah will defeat him and his armies, until the remaining part of a broken wall and the trunk of a tree will call out, 'O believer, this disbeliever is hiding behind me, come and kill him.'" And he said: "It will not be so until you see in yourselves very grave and severe matters. You will ask each other, 'Did your Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mention anything about this to you?' Until after this calamity, the mountains will move from their places." He (peace and blessings be upon him) gestured with his hand. Thalabah says that then I attended another sermon of Sayyiduna Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him), and he narrated this hadith. He did not change anything in it. Imam Abu Bakr (may Allah have mercy on him) says that in this hadith, the words "his voice was being heard" pertain to the same category which we have already explained: that the report which must be accepted is the report of the narrator who informs about the occurrence of something, not the one who informs about the non-occurrence of something. Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) has informed that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited aloud (jahr) in the eclipse prayer. Therefore, it is obligatory to accept the report of Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), because she remembered the loud recitation, even if other narrators did not remember it. And it is also possible that Sayyiduna Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) was standing in a distant row during the recitation of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so his saying that the Prophet's voice was not being heard means that I was not hearing the voice. As I have already explained, the Arabs say, "This thing did not happen," meaning that knowledge of this thing was not obtained.
