Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by Sayyiduna Hassan (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was reciting poetry in the mosque. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) looked at him (angrily), so he said, "I used to recite poetry (even at that time) when there was a person present in it who is superior to you (i.e., the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him)." Then he turned towards Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) and said, "I ask you by Allah, did you hear the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: '(O Hassan) reply on my behalf (to the satire of the polytheists), O Allah, help him with the Holy Spirit'?" He replied, "Yes, (I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say this)." In the narration of Sa'id, the words are: "I used to recite poetry in this mosque when there was a person present in it who is superior to you." In the narration of Hasan, the words are: "I used to recite poetry (while) in this mosque when there was a person present in it who is better and higher than you."
