(313) بَابُ نَسْخِ الْكَلَامِ فِي الصَّلَاةِ، وَحَظْرِهِ بَعْدَمَا كَانَ مُبَاحًا
313 Chapter: Abrogation of Speaking in Prayer and Its Prohibition after It Was Permitted.
Hadith 855
نَا يُوسُفُ بْنُ مُوسَى الْقَطَّانُ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ فُضَيْلٍ ، أنا الأَعْمَشُ ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : كُنَّا نُسَلِّمُ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ فِي الصَّلاةِ ، فَيَرُدُّ عَلَيْنَا ، فَلَمَّا رَجَعْنَا مِنْ عِنْدِ النَّجَاشِيِّ سَلَّمْنَا عَلَيْهِ فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيْنَا ، فَقُلْنَا : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، كُنَّا نُسَلِّمُ عَلَيْكَ فِي الصَّلاةِ وَتَرُدُّ عَلَيْنَا ، فَقَالَ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِنَّ فِي الصَّلاةِ لَشُغْلا "
Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that we used to greet the Prophet (peace be upon him) with salam while he was praying, and he (peace be upon him) would respond to our salam. So when we returned from Najashi (after the migration to Abyssinia), we greeted the Prophet (peace be upon him) with salam (while he was in prayer), but he (peace be upon him) did not respond to our salam. We said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), we used to greet you with salam during prayer and you would respond to our salam. (Why did you not respond now?)" The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied: "There is engagement in prayer."
Hadith 856
حَدَّثَنَا بُنْدَارٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، وَيَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ ، قَالا : أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ ، ح وَنا أَبُو هَاشِمٍ زِيَادُ بْنُ أَيُّوبَ ، حَدَّثَنَا هُشَيْمٌ ، عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ أَبِي خَالِدٍ ، عَنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ شُبَيْلٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي عَمْرٍو الشَّيْبَانِيِّ ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَرْقَمَ ، قَالَ : " كَانَ يُكَلِّمُ الرَّجُلُ إِلَى جَنْبِهِ فِي الصَّلاةِ ، حَتَّى نَزَلَتْ ، وَقُومُوا لِلَّهِ قَانِتِينَ سورة البقرة آية 238 زَادَ فِي حَدِيثِ هُشَيْمٍ : فَأُمِرْنَا بِالسُّكُوتِ ، وَنُهِينَا عَنِ الْكَلامِ "
Sayyiduna Zaid bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that a man would talk to the person standing next to him in prayer until this verse was revealed « وَقُومُوا لِلَّهِ قَانِتِينَ » [ سورة البقرة : 238 ] "And stand before Allah with humility." In the narration of Janab Huthaym, there is this addition: So we were commanded to remain silent and forbidden from speaking.
Hadith 857
حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ حَكِيمٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ أَبِي خَالِدٍ ، بِمِثْلِ حَدِيثِ بُنْدَارٍ ، غَيْرَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ : " كَانَ يُكَلِّمُ الرَّجُلُ صَاحِبَهُ فِي الصَّلاةِ بِالْحَاجَةِ ، عَلَى عَهْدِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، حَتَّى نَزَلَتْ وَقُومُوا لِلَّهِ قَانِتِينَ سورة البقرة آية 238 ، فَأُمِرْنَا بِالسُّكُوتِ "
Hazrat Ismail bin Abi Khalid narrated in the manner of Bundar’s previous hadith, but he stated these words: In the time of the Prophet (peace be upon him), a person would speak to his companion during prayer if necessary, until this verse was revealed « وَقُومُوا لِلَّهِ قَانِتِينَ » [ سورة البقرة : 238 ] "And stand before Allah with devotion." Then we were commanded to remain silent.
Hadith 858
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُوسَى نا يَحْيَى بْنُ حَمَّادٍ ، نَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ ، عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : كُنَّا نُسَلِّمُ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَهُوَ يُصَلِّي بِمِثْلِهِ ، وَقَالَ : فَرَدَّ عَلَيْنَا ، فَقَالَ : " إِنَّ فِي الصَّلاةِ لَشُغْلا " قُلْتُ لإِبْرَاهِيمَ : كَيْفَ تُسَلِّمُ أَنْتَ ؟ قَالَ : أَرُدُّ فِي نَفْسِي
Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that we used to greet the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) with salam during prayer. He narrated similar to the previous hadith, and said that the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to reply to our salam (later the ruling was changed), and he said: "Indeed, there is engagement in prayer." (Therefore, do not reply to salam verbally while in prayer.) I asked Ibrahim, "How do you reply to salam?" He replied, "I reply in my heart."
