Hazrat Nafi’ says that Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) saw me performing prayer in a single garment, so he said, “Did I not give you two garments to wear?” I replied, “Indeed, you did.” He said, “What do you think, if I were to send you for some task, would you go in just one garment?” I replied, “No.” He said, “Allah Almighty has more right that you adorn yourself for Him.” Then he said, “I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: ‘When any one of you has only one garment, he should tie it around his waist and not wrap himself in it like the Jews.’” Imam Abu Bakr (may Allah have mercy on him) says that this narration is also concise and unexplained. The garment which the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered to be tied around the waist is a narrow garment, not a loose and wide one. And the narration that explains these two concise hadiths is as follows.
Hadith 767
It is narrated from Hazrat Saeed bin Harith (may Allah have mercy on him) that he, along with a group whose names he mentioned, went to the service of Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both). When we reached him, we found him wrapped in a single garment, performing prayer, the edges of which he had turned over, while the (upper) sheet to cover himself was lying close by. If you wanted to pick it up, you could have. He says that when he finished the prayer with salam, we asked him about praying in a single garment. He replied, "I have done this so that ignorant people like you may see me, so that a concession from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) may spread among the people, which was granted by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Indeed, I accompanied the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on a journey. I came to him at night for some need of mine and saw him praying while I had only one garment on, which I had wrapped around myself. So I prayed beside the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). When he finished the prayer, he said: 'Jabir, what brings you at this hour of the night?' I informed him of my need. When I was done, he said: 'Jabir, how is this sheet wrapped, as I have seen?' I replied (I did this because) the garment was only one and it was tight. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'When you pray and you have only one garment on your body, if it is open and wide, then wrap it around yourself, and if it is tight, then make it a lower garment (waist-wrapper).' "
