Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah

And the explanation of the evidence that the Prophet ﷺ, in the narration of Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him), commanded that (the one who hears the adhan) should say just as the muezzin says, until he (the muezzin) finishes (the adhan), and you ﷺ would also say just as the muezzin says, until he becomes silent, except for "Hayya 'ala as-Salah" and "Hayya 'ala al-Falah" (for their response).

Sayyiduna Isa bin Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that we were present in the company of Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) when the muezzin called the adhan for prayer. He said « اللهُ أَكْبَرُ، للهُ أَكْبَرُ » "Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest," so Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) also said « اللهُ أَكْبَرُ، للهُ أَكْبَرُ ». Then he said « أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ » "I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah," so Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) also said « أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ ». Then he said « أَشْهَدُ أَنْ مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ ٱللَّٰه » "I bear witness that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah." Then he said « حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ » "Come to prayer," so Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said « لَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَٰهِ » "There is no power to avoid sin nor strength to do good except with Allah's help." Then he said « حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ » "Come to success," so Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said « لَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَٰهِ » "There is no power to avoid sin nor strength to do good except with Allah's help." Then he said that I heard your Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) responding to the adhan in this manner.

The freed slave of Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan, Hazrat Muhammad bin Yusuf (may Allah have mercy on him), narrates that when the muezzin gave the adhan and said: « اللهُ أَكْبَرُ، للهُ أَكْبَرُ » "Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest," then Sayyiduna Muawiyah bin Abi Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him) said « اللهُ أَكْبَرُ، للهُ أَكْبَرُ » so he said « أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ » "I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah," Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) also said « أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ » he said « أَشْهَدُ أَنْ مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ ٱللَّٰه » "I bear witness that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah." Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) also said « أَشْهَدُ أَنْ مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ ٱللَّٰه » Then Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying in this manner.

Hazrat Muhammad bin Amr narrates that my respected father narrated from my grandfather that I was with Sayyiduna Muawiyah bin Abi Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with them) when the muezzin said « اللهُ أَكْبَرُ، اللهُ أَكْبَرُ » "Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest," so Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said « اللهُ أَكْبَرُ، للهُ أَكْبَرُ », then he (the muezzin) said « أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ » "I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah," so Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) also said « أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ », then he (the muezzin) said « أَشْهَدُ أَنْ مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ ٱللَّٰه » "I bear witness that Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah." So Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) also said « أَشْهَدُ أَنْ مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ ٱللَّٰه », then he (the muezzin) said « حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ » "Come to prayer," so Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said « لَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَٰهِ » "There is no power to do good and no strength to avoid evil except with Allah's help." Then he (the muezzin) called « حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ » "Come to success," so Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said « لَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَٰهِ », then he (the muezzin) said « اللهُ أَكْبَرُ ، اللهُ أَكْبَرُ ، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ » "Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, there is no deity except Allah." So Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) also said « اللهُ أَكْبَرُ، اللهُ أَكْبَرُ، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ ». Then he said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to say likewise. Imam Abu Bakr (may Allah have mercy on him) says that the hadith of Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) is also related to this chapter; I have mentioned it in another chapter. Imam Abu Bakr (may Allah have mercy on him) says that the meaning of the hadith of Sayyidah Umm Habibah (may Allah be pleased with her) is that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), while responding to the adhan, said the same words as the muezzin until he finished the adhan, except for « حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ » and « حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ », (in response to these he said « لَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَٰهِ »). Likewise, the meaning of the hadith of Sayyiduna Abu Saeed Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) is also that you should respond to the adhan in the same way as the muezzin says, except for « حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ » and « حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ ». The ahadith of Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab and Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with them) explain these two ahadith. In the ahadith of Sayyiduna Umar and Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with them), it is stated that whoever hears the adhan for prayer from the muezzin should repeat the words just as the muezzin says, except for the words « حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ » and « حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ », in response to these words he should say « لَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَٰهِ ».
