Sayyiduna Malik bin Huwairith (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that I and another man came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Then when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gave us permission to leave, he said: "When both of you travel and the time for prayer comes, then give the adhan and the iqamah, and the one who is older among you should lead you in prayer." Khalid Hadhdha says: We both were equal in the recitation of the Qur'an.
بِذِكْرِ خَبَرٍ لَفْظُهُ عَامٌّ مُرَادُهُ خَاصٌّ
The narration in this regard whose wording is general but its meaning is specific.

So (at the time of farewell) the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When both of you travel, give the adhan and say the takbir, and let the elder of you lead the prayer."
