Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah

Sayyiduna Abu Mahdhurah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) returned from Hunayn, I was the tenth among ten people who set out from Makkah in search of the Muslims. I heard them giving the adhan for prayer, so we stood and began to call the adhan in mockery with them. (Hearing our voices) the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "I have heard a pleasant-voiced person giving the adhan among these people." Therefore, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sent someone to call us. (When we presented ourselves, the Prophet peace and blessings of Allah be upon him ordered us to give the adhan.) So we each gave the adhan one by one. I was the last. When I gave the adhan, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Come to me." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) seated me in front of him, passed his blessed hand over my forehead, and supplicated for blessing for me three times. Then he said: "Go and give the adhan at the House of Allah (Bayt al-Haram)." I said, O Messenger of Allah, how (should I give the adhan)? So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) taught me the adhan as Muslims give it today. « اللهُ أَكْبَرُ، اللهُ أَكْبَرُ، اللهُ أَكْبَرُ، اللهُ أَكْبَرُ » "Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest" « أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ » "I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah" « أَشْهَدُ أَنْ مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ ٱللَّٰه، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ ٱللَّٰه » "I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah" « حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ، حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ » "Come to prayer, come to prayer" « حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ، حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ » "Come to success, come to success" In the first adhan of the morning, he made me say these words « اَلصَّلٰوۃُ خَیْرٌ مِّنَ النَّوْم، اَلصَّلٰوۃُ خَیْرٌ مِّنَ النَّوْم » "Prayer is better than sleep, prayer is better than sleep" « اللهُ أَكْبَرُ، اللهُ أَكْبَرُ » "Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest" « لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ » (There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah) He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) taught me the words of iqamah twice each. « اللهُ أَكْبَرُ، اللهُ أَكْبَرُ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ ٱللَّٰه، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ ٱللَّٰه، حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ، حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ، حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ، حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ، قَد قَامَتِ الصَّلَاةُ، قَد قَامَتِ الصَّلَاةُ، » "The prayer is established, the prayer is established." « اللهُ أَكْبَرُ، اللهُ أَكْبَرُ ، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ » Ibn Jurayj says that all of this was narrated to me by Uthman from his father and Umm Abd al-Malik bint Abi Mahdhurah; they heard this narration from Sayyiduna Abu Mahdhurah (may Allah be pleased with him). Ibn Rafi‘ and Yazid bin Sinan have mentioned in the hadith that at the beginning of the adhan « اللهُ أَكْبَرُ ، اللهُ أَكْبَرُ ، اللهُ أَكْبَرُ ، اللهُ أَكْبَرُ » (i.e., four times) is said. Yazid bin Sinan has mentioned the words of iqamah as being said twice each, as in the narration of Duraqi. Ibn Rafi‘ in his hadith said that when you give the iqamah, say it twice « قَد قَامَتِ الصَّلَاةُ، قَد قَامَتِ الصَّلَاةُ » "The prayer is established, it is established." Have you heard? And he also added that Sayyiduna Abu Mahdhurah (may Allah be pleased with him) neither cut the hair of his forehead nor parted it, because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had passed his blessed hand over it. Yazid bin Sinan added at the end of his narration that Ibn Jurayj said that all of this hadith was narrated to me by Uthman from his father and Umm Abd al-Malik bint Abi Mahdhurah; they heard this narration from Sayyiduna Abu Mahdhurah (may Allah be pleased with him).

Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that it is Sunnah that when the muezzin says « حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ » in the Fajr adhan, he should say « اَلصَّلٰوۃُ خَیْرٌ مِّنَ النَّوْم » "Prayer is better than sleep."
