Hadith Q367
After the Prophet (peace be upon him), it was not Abu Bakr or Umar (may Allah be pleased with them), as some ignorant people have claimed that it is possible that Abu Bakr as-Siddiq or Umar al-Faruq (may Allah be pleased with them) ordered Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) to do this.
Hadith 367
Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Companions searched for something by which they could announce the time of prayer, so that they could call the Adhan. He says that Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) was commanded to say the words of the Adhan twice each and the words of the Iqamah once each.
Hadith 368
Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that when the (Muslim) people increased in number, they discussed that there should be some well-known thing by which they could know the time of prayer (and gather for prayer). So they discussed that they could light a fire, or ring a bell. Then Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) was ordered to say the words of the adhan twice each, and the words of the iqamah once each.
Hadith 369
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that in the blessed era of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), when the time for prayer would arrive, a man would walk along the road calling out, "Prayer, prayer, prayer." This became burdensome for the people, so they said, "O Messenger of Allah, if we start ringing a bell (it would be better)." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "That is the practice of the Christians." They said, "If we start blowing a horn (that would also be fine)." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "That is the practice of the Jews." It is said that Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) was commanded to say the words of the adhan twice and the words of the takbir once.
