Chapter 5: Evidence that establishing prayer is part of faith
Hadith 307
نا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ بُنْدَارٌ ، نا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ . ح وَحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ ، نا أَبُو عَامِرٍ ، نا قُرَّةَ جَمِيعًا ، عَنْ أَبِي جَمْرَةَ الضُّبَعِيِّ وَهُوَ نَصْرُ بْنُ عِمْرَانَ ، قَالَ : قُلْتُ لابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ : إِنَّ جَرَّةً لِي أَنْتَبِذُ فِيهَا ، فَأَشْرَبُ مِنْهُ ، فَإِذَا أَطَلْتُ الْجُلُوسَ مَعَ الْقَوْمِ خَشِيتُ أَنْ أَفْتَضِحَ مَنْ حَلاوَتِهِ ، قَالَ : قَدِمَ وَفْدُ عَبْدِ الْقَيْسِ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : " مَرْحَبًا بِالْوَفْدِ ، غَيْرَ خَزَايَا وَلا نَدَامَى " ، فَقَالُوا : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، إِنَّ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَكَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ مِنْ مُضَرَ ، وَإِنَّا لا نَصِلُ إِلَيْكَ إِلا فِي الأَشْهُرِ الْحُرُمِ ، فَحَدِّثْنَا جُمَلا مِنَ الأَمْرِ إِذَا أَخَذْنَا عَمِلْنَا بِهِ ، أَوْ إِذَا أَحَدُنَا عَمِلَ بِهِ ، دَخَلَ بِهِ الْجَنَّةَ ، وَنَدْعُو إِلَيْهِ مَنْ وَرَاءَنَا ، قَالَ : " آمُرُكُمْ بِأَرْبَعٍ ، وَأَنْهَاكُمْ عَنْ أَرْبَعٍ : الإِيمَانُ بِاللَّهِ ، وَهَلْ تَدْرُونَ مَا الإِيمَانُ بِاللَّهِ ؟ " ، قَالُوا : اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ ، قَالَ : " شَهَادَةُ أَنْ لا إِلَهَ إِلا اللَّهُ ، وَإِقَامُ الصَّلاةِ ، وَإِيتَاءُ الزَّكَاةِ ، وَصَوْمُ رَمَضَانَ ، وَتُعْطُوا الْخُمُسَ مِنَ الْمَغَانِمِ ، وَأَنْهَاكُمْ عَنِ النَّبِيذِ فِي الدُّبَّا , وَالنَّقِيرِ ، وَالْحَنْتَمِ ، وَالْمُزَفَّتِ " . هَذَا لَفْظُ حَدِيثِ قُرَّةَ بْنِ خَالِدٍ
Hazrat Abu Jamrah Duba'i Nasr bin Imran, may Allah have mercy on him, narrates that I said to Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, that I have a jug in which I make nabidh (a drink) and I drink from it. Then, when I sit with people for a long time, I fear disgrace and infamy because of its sweetness (that people might think it is intoxicating). He said: The delegation of Abdul Qais came to the service of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, so he said: "Welcome to the delegation, neither were you humiliated nor were you regretful." (Meaning, you became honored by becoming Muslims with happiness.) So they said: O Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, indeed there are the polytheists of the tribe of Mudar between us and you (as a barrier), and we can only come to you in the sacred months. Therefore, please explain to us all the rulings of the religion so that when we acquire them and act upon them (or when any one of us acts upon them), he will enter Paradise, and we may also invite those we leave behind to them. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "I command you with four things and I forbid you from four things. I command you to have faith in Allah. Do you know what it is to have faith in Allah?" They said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "To testify that there is no god but Allah, to establish prayer, to give zakat, to fast in Ramadan, and to give one-fifth of the spoils of war, and I forbid you from making nabidh in pumpkin vessels, hollowed-out wooden vessels, green glazed jars, and tar-coated vessels."
