Hadith 272

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates a marfu’ tradition regarding the statement of Allah Almighty « وَإِن كُنتُم مَّرْضَىٰ أَوْ عَلَىٰ سَفَرٍ » [ سورة النساء ] “And if you are ill or on a journey,” that if a Muslim person is wounded in the path of Allah Almighty, or he develops boils or abscesses, or he is afflicted with smallpox, and he becomes in a state of janabah, and he fears death if he performs ghusl, then he should perform tayammum. Imam Abu Bakr (may Allah have mercy on him) says that no one except Ata bin Sa’ib has narrated this tradition as marfu’.
Hadith 273
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a man became junub (in a state requiring ritual bath) during winter, so he asked about the matter, and he was ordered to perform ghusl (ritual bath). (He performed ghusl) and then he died. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "What happened to them? They killed him, may Allah kill them." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said three times: "Allah has made earth or tayammum a means of purification." There is doubt regarding Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) (whether he said 'earth' or 'tayammum'), then this doubt was removed.
