(144) بَابُ ذِكْرِ مَسْحِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ بَعْدَ نُزُولِ سُورَةِ الْمَائِدَةِ ضِدُّ قَوْلِ مَنْ زَعَمَ أَنَّ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّمَا مَسَحَ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ قَبْلَ نُزُولِ الْمَائِدَةِ
Chapter 144: The Prophet’s wiping over leather socks after the revelation of Surat al-Ma’idah, contrary to some claims
Hadith 186
نا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْعَلاءِ بْنِ كُرَيْبٍ ، نا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ . ح وَحَدَّثَنَا سَلْمُ بْنُ جُنَادَةَ ، نا وَكِيعٌ ، كِلاهُمَا ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ . ح وَحَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الزَّعْفَرَانِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ، نا الأَعْمَشُ . وَحَدَّثَنَا الصَّنْعَانِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدُ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ ، نا شُعْبَةُ ، عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ وَهُوَ الأَعْمَشُ ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، عَنْ هَمَّامٍ ، قَالَ : رَأَيْتُ جَرِيرًا بَالَ ، ثُمَّ دَعَا بِمَاءٍ " فَتَوَضَّأَ وَمَسَحَ عَلَى خُفَّيْهِ ، ثُمَّ قَامَ فَصَلَّى " ، فَسُئِلَ عَنْ ذَلِكَ ، فَقَالَ : " رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ صَنَعَ مِثْلَ هَذَا " ، هَذَا حَدِيثُ الصَّنْعَانِيِّ ، وَلَمْ يَقُلِ الآخَرُونَ : رَأَيْتُ جَرِيرًا . وَفِي حَدِيثِ أَبِي أُسَامَةَ ، قَالَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ : وَكَانَ أَصْحَابَنَا يُعْجِبُهُمْ حَدِيثَ جَرِيرٍ ، لأَنَّ إِسْلامَهُ كَانَ بَعْدَ نُزُولِ الْمَائِدَةِ . وَفِي حَدِيثِ وَكِيعٍ : كَانَ يُعْجِبُهُمْ حَدِيثُ جَرِيرٍ ، إِسْلامُهُ كَانَ بَعْدَ نُزُولِ الْمَائِدَةِ
Hazrat Hammam narrates that I saw Sayyiduna Jarir (may Allah be pleased with him), he urinated, then stood and performed prayer. He was asked about this (why he wiped over the socks), so he replied that I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) doing the same. This is the narration of San‘ani. The rest of the narrators did not mention the words « رأيت جريراً » "I saw Jarir." Now, in Usama's narration, Ibrahim says that our companions greatly liked the hadith of Sayyiduna Jarir (may Allah be pleased with him) because he accepted Islam after the revelation of Surah Ma'idah. And in Waki‘’s narration, it is mentioned that they greatly liked the hadith of Sayyiduna Jarir (may Allah be pleased with him) because he accepted Islam after the revelation of Surah Ma'idah.
Hadith 187
نا أَبُو عَمَّارٍ الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ حُرَيْثٍ ، نا الْفَضْلُ بْنُ مُوسَى ، عَنْ بُكَيْرِ بْنِ عَامِرٍ الْبَجَلِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي زُرْعَةَ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ جَرِيرٍ ، أَنَّ جَرِيرًا بَالَ وَتَوَضَّأَ ، وَمَسَحَ عَلَى خُفَّيْهِ فَعَابُوا عَلَيْهِ ، فَقَالَ : رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " يَمْسَحُ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ " . فَقِيلَ لَهُ : ذَلِكَ قَبْلَ الْمَائِدَةِ ؟ قَالَ : " إِنَّمَا كَانَ إِسْلامِي بَعْدَ الْمَائِدَةِ "
It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Zar’ah bin Amr bin Jarir (may Allah have mercy on him) that Sayyiduna Jarir (may Allah be pleased with him) urinated and performed ablution, and wiped over his leather socks (khuffs). So people found fault with him (i.e., they disliked and considered his wiping insufficient). He said: I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wiping over his leather socks. It was said to him: (The wiping of your socks by the Prophet, peace be upon him) was before the revelation of Surah Al-Ma’idah? He replied: Indeed, I embraced Islam only after the revelation of Surah Al-Ma’idah.
Hadith 188
نا نا أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ فَهْدُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ الْبَصْرِيُّ ، نا مُوسَى بْنُ دَاوُدَ ، نا حَفْصُ بْنُ غِيَاثٍ ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، عَنْ هَمَّامٍ ، عَنْ جَرِيرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : " أَسْلَمْتُ قَبْلَ وَفَاةِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِأَرْبَعِينَ يَوْمًا "
Hazrat Hammam narrates from Sayyiduna Jarir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said, "I embraced Islam forty days before the demise of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)."
