Chapter 110: Mentioning Allah’s name when performing ablution
Hadith 144
نا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى ، وَعَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ بِشْرِ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ ، قَالا : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ ، أَخْبَرَنَا مَعْمَرٌ ، عَنْ ثَابِتٍ ، وَقَتَادَةَ ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ ، قَالَ : طَلَبَ بَعْضُ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَضُوءًا ، فَلَمْ يَجِدُوا ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " هَاهُنَا مَاءٌ " ، فَرَأَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَضْعَ يَدَهُ فِي الإِنَاءِ الَّذِي فِيهِ الْمَاءُ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : " تَوَضَّئُوا بِسْمِ اللَّهِ " ، فَرَأَيْتُ الْمَاءَ يَفُورُ مِنْ بَيْنِ أَصَابِعِهِ ، وَالْقَوْمُ يَتَوَضَّئُونَ ، حَتَّى تَوَضَّئُوا مِنْ آخِرِهِمْ ، قَالَ ثَابِتٌ : فَقُلْتُ لأَنَسٍ : كَمْ تُرَاهُمْ كَانُوا ؟ قَالَ : نَحْوًا مِنْ سَبْعِينَ
Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that some of the companions (may Allah be pleased with them) of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) searched for water but did not find any. (They came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and complained about the scarcity of water.) So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “(Do you have) any water?” (A small amount of water was brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).) Then I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) place his blessed hand in that vessel of water, then he said: “Perform ablution by reciting Bismillah.” So I saw water gushing out from between the fingers of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while the people were performing ablution, until all of them had performed ablution. Thabit says that I asked Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), “In your opinion, how many people were there?” He replied that they were about seventy.
