(36) بَابُ ذِكْرِ مَا كَانَ اللَّهُ- عَزَّ وَجَلَّ- فَرَّقَ بِهِ بَيْنَ نَبِيِّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، وَبَيْنَ أُمَّتِهِ فِي النَّوْمِ؛
Chapter 36: What Allah distinguished between His Prophet and his nation regarding sleep
Hadith Q48
مِنْ أَنَّ عَيْنَيْهِ إِذَا نَامَتَا لَمْ يَكُنْ قَلْبُهُ يَنَامُ، فَفَرَّقَ بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَهُمْ فِي إِيجَابِ الْوُضُوءِ مِنَ النَّوْمِ عَلَى أُمَّتِهِ دُونَهُ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ
Because when the eyes of the Prophet (ﷺ) sleep, his heart remains awake. In the same way, there is a difference between the Prophet (ﷺ) and the Ummah regarding the obligation of ablution after sleep. For the Ummah, ablution becomes obligatory after sleep, but not for the Prophet (ﷺ).
Hadith 48
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ عَجْلانَ . ح وَحَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ حَكِيمٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَجْلانَ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ أَبِي ، يُحَدِّثُ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " تَنَامُ عَيْنَايَ وَلا يَنَامُ قَلْبِي "
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "My eyes sleep but my heart does not sleep."
Hadith 49
حَدَّثَنَا يُونُسُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الأَعْلَى الصَّدَفِيُّ ، أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ ، أَنَّ مَالِكًا حَدَّثَهُ ، عَنْ سَعِيدٍ الْمَقْبُرِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّهُ سَأَلَ عَائِشَةَ : كَيْفَ كَانَتْ صَلاةُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ؟ فَقَالَتْ : مَا كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَزِيدُ فِي رَمَضَانَ وَلا فِي غَيْرِهِ عَلَى إِحْدَى عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً يُصَلِّي أَرْبَعًا ، فَلا تَسْأَلْ عَنْ حُسْنِهِنَّ وَطُولِهِنَّ ، ثُمَّ يُصَلِّي أَرْبَعًا فَلا تَسْأَلْ عَنْ حُسْنِهِنَّ وَطُولِهِنَّ ، ثُمَّ يُصَلِّي ثَلاثًا ، قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ : فَقُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، أَتَنَامُ قَبْلَ أَنْ تُوتِرَ ؟ فَقَالَ : " يَا عَائِشَةُ ، إِنَّ عَيْنَيَّ تَنَامَانِ وَلا يَنَامُ قَلْبِي "
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Salamah Abdur Rahman (may Allah be pleased with him) that he asked Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) about the manner of the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) (tahajjud) prayer. Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would not perform more than eleven rak‘ahs in Ramadan or in any other month. He (peace and blessings be upon him) would perform four rak‘ahs—do not ask about their excellence and length. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) would perform another four rak‘ahs—do not ask about their beauty and length. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) would perform three rak‘ahs. Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says: I asked, “O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), do you sleep before performing witr?” He (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: “O Aisha, indeed my eyes sleep but my heart does not sleep.” (It remains awake.)
