(60) بَابُ الدَّلِيلِ عَلَى أَنَّ الْأَمْرَ بِالْوِتْرِ فِي الِاسْتِطَابَةِ أَمْرُ اسْتِحْبَابٍ لَا أَمْرُ إِيجَابٍChapter 60: Evidence that using an odd number is recommended, not obligatory
Hadith Q77
وَأَنَّ مَنِ اسْتَطَابَ بِأَكْثَرَ مِنْ ثَلَاثَةٍ بِشَفْعٍ لَا بِوِتْرٍ غَيْرُ عَاصٍ فِي فِعْلِهِ، إِذْ تَارِكُ الِاسْتِحْبَابِ غَيْرِ الْإِيجَابِ تَارِكُ فَضِيلَةٍ لَا فَرِيضَةٍ
And whoever used more than three even stones for istinja and did not use an odd number, then he will not be sinful because he has left a non-obligatory, recommended, and superior act, not an obligatory one.
