It is narrated from Hazrat Safwan bin Ya'la bin Umayyah that Sayyiduna Ya'la bin Umayyah (may Allah be pleased with him) expressed his desire to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that he wished he could see the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) in the state when revelation was being sent down upon him. Coincidentally, when you were at the place of Ji'ranah and a cloth was providing shade over you, and some of your companions were also behind that shade, at that moment a man came to you in such a state that he was drenched in perfume. He said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), what is your command regarding a person who, after applying perfume, has put on the Ihram in a cloak?" You looked at him for a while, then revelation began to descend upon you. So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) sent a message to Sayyiduna Ya'la bin Umayyah (may Allah be pleased with him) saying, "Come (and fulfill your wish)." So he came and put his head inside the canopy. Suddenly, he saw that the blessed face of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was red, and this state remained for a while, then after the revelation was complete, this state ended. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Where is the person who just asked me about Umrah?" That person was searched for and brought, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded him, "Wash off the perfume from your body three times and take off the cloak (and wear the two sheets instead), then perform in your Umrah the same acts that you do in your Hajj."
And the dropping of the expiation from the one who does it, contrary to the school of those who claim that expiation is obligatory upon him even if he is ignorant, because applying perfume and wearing what is worn of clothes is not permissible for him, by mentioning a report with a wording regarding perfume, in which some of those who disliked perfume at the time of ihram before a person enters ihram erred in using it as evidence, among those who did not distinguish between what is earlier and what is later from the Sunnahs of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and do not differentiate between the general reports and those that are explained among them.
