Hadith Q165

And the statement of the correctness of Allama Matlabi’s interpretation is that the meaning of the verse is of precedence and delay, that is, « فَاغْسِلُوا وُجُوهَكُمْ وَأَيْدِيَكُمْ إِلَى الْمَرَافِقِ وَامْسَحُوا بِرُءُوسِكُمْ » [ سورة المائدة ] “wash your faces, your hands, and your feet, and wipe your heads.” That is, in the verse, the mention of wiping comes before the mention of the feet, as Sayyiduna Ibn Mas’ud, Ibn Abbas, and ‘Urwah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with them) have said that « وَأَرْجُلَكُمْ إِلَى الْكَعْبَيْنِ » “your feet up to the ankles” refers back to the command of washing.
